Building Belonging and Celebrating 'Super You!'

Dear Parents,

During the first six weeks of the academic year, our priority is to lay a strong foundation of belonging for every child.
Feeling safe, seen, and valued is fundamental to young children's learning and development. When children feel a genuine sense of belonging, they are more likely to engage confidently, build trusting relationships, and express themselves freely.

We are deeply committed to creating an environment where each child knows: this school is their school—a place where they are celebrated, their voice is heard, and their presence truly matters.

Across our classes, children have been engaging in meaningful experiences that help them see themselves in their learning environment. From how they are welcomed each morning, to photographs and portraits to birthday charts and personalised peg labels, every detail is designed to reinforce each child’s sense of identity and connection.

In Nursery, our team has lovingly created peg labels featuring each child’s name, photograph, and a family photo. These visual cues not only help children feel proud and secure but also remind them that they are cared for and belong.

In Reception, children have been busy drawing their families—resulting in a beautiful display filled with warmth and personality. These drawings sparked heartfelt conversations about who is special to them and what makes their family unique. This kind of sharing builds empathy, language skills, and a deeper understanding of relationships.

In Year 1, the theme “Super You!” has inspired children to create vibrant self-portraits, each one bursting with individuality. These artworks celebrate self-confidence and help children begin to explore who they are and how they connect with the world around them.

These activities are not just creative—they are deeply rooted in child development and research. When children feel a sense of belonging, they are more likely to build trusting relationships, engage confidently in learning, and express their thoughts and feelings.

As teachers, these first weeks are invaluable. We observe how each child approaches learning, how they interact with peers and adults, and how they see themselves in their new environment. This growing understanding allows us to make learning meaningful—supporting curiosity, encouraging questions, and helping children make sense of the world and their place in it.
